LONDON FILM FESTIVAL DAILY PICK: MY FATHER’S SHADOW

LONDON FILM FESTIVAL DAILY PICK: MY FATHER’S SHADOW!

As the London Film Festival continues, we’ve been discovering more standout titles that showcase the diversity of voices shaping contemporary cinema.

One that particularly resonated with us is ‘MY FATHER’S SHADOW’ , the debut feature from Akinola Davies Jr, screening in the First Feature Competition and recently announced as the UK’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. Set in Lagos, the film follows two brothers spending a rare day with their father, Fola (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù), as they begin to understand him and the sacrifices he has made, all against the backdrop of Nigeria’s presidential election.

MY FATHER’S SHADOW’ is an intimate portrait of family, legacy, and the quiet moments that define understanding.

LFF HIGHLIGHTS: IF I HAD LEGS I’D KICK YOU

LFF HIGHLIGHTS: IF I HAD LEGS I’D KICK YOU.

Following an inspiring week at the London Film Festival, we continued exploring the programme and discovered more standout films that capture the talent showcased across the festival. One title that’s catching our attention right now is 'IF I HAD LEGS I’D KICK YOU', directed by Mary Bronstein and starring Rose Byrne.

After premiering at Sundance, the film headed to Berlin – where Byrne received the Silver Bear for Best Actress – the film offers a darkly funny and unflinching look at motherhood on the brink. Byrne plays Linda, a therapist and mother struggling to hold her life together as her child’s mysterious illness and an absent husband push her to the edge, delivering a tense and deeply affecting performance.

There’s plenty more to see, and we can’t wait to dive in.

THE BEST OF LFF 2025: ECHO'S TOP THREE FILM RECOMMENDATIONS FROM LAST WEEK!

THE BEST OF LFF 2025: ECHO'S TOP THREE FILM RECOMMENDATIONS FROM LAST WEEK!

We had the chance to see an exceptional lineup of films at the London Film Festival last week and left inspired by the creativity and talent on display across the industry. From the screenings we attended, here are three standout films we recommend checking out:

'ALPHA', from director Julia Ducournau, produced by Petit Film. It’s about a 13‑year‑old girl named Alpha who goes home from school with a tattoo, and soon after, her mother fears she may have caught a mysterious virus that’s turning people into marble‑like statues.

'THE BLUE TRAIL' directed by Zineb Wakrim and produced by Desvia Filmes about a young girl who navigates a tense day in Casablanca, quietly observing the world around her as unspoken tensions rise.

'BUGONIA', directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and produced by Element Pictures. Two conspiracy‑obsessed men kidnap a pharmaceutical CEO (played by Emma Stone), believing she is an alien who wants to destroy Earth. What follows is a dark, satirical game of psychological and moral unraveling.

We’re so excited to see what this week has in store for us!
